The Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center/Consortium for Worker Education (BLHC/CWE) provides training opportunities for health care professionals to gain new medical information, clinical experience and update their technology skills by enabling them to retain jobs and advance their careers. BLHC/CWE collaborates with health care unions (such as 1199/SEIU, DC37), the New York City Health and Hospital Corporation and healthcare facilities in all five boroughs as well as Westchester County. This strong partnership with labor-management ensures successful clinical training and placement for all students.
The surgical technologist plays a vital role as a member of the health care team in the operating room. The individual works under the supervision of a surgeon to ensure that the operating room or environment is safe, that equipment functions properly and that the operative procedures are conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. A surgical technologist possesses expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic techniques and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician’s performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. Surgical technologists have primary responsibilities in maintaining the sterile field and being constantly vigilant that all members of the team adhere to proper technique.
BLHC/CWE offers certification in surgical technology through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assistant (NBSTSA). Any student who successfully completes the entire course study is eligible to take the national qualifying examination. Graduates of the program are expected to have the ability to obtain entry-level employment in various surgical environments in the role of a Scrub, Circulating Assistant, or Second Assistant.
Accelerated Alternate Delivery (AAD) Program
